Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the possible liability of a local recruitment agency for the death of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Joanna Demafelis.
In issuing Department Order (DO) 102 on Monday, Aguirre gave the NBI authority to do a case build-up and determine possible accountability of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Global E-Human Resources Inc. over Demafelis’ gruesome death.
“The NBI, through Director Dante A. Gierran Jr. is hereby directed and granted authority to conduct investigation and case build-up on the possible liabilities of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Global E-Human Resources Inc., in relation to the death of OFW Joanna Demafelis and if evidence so warrants, to file appropriate charges thereon,” Aguirre’s directive stated.
Aguirre issued the order following President Rodrigo Duterte’s instruction for the NBI to summon Demafelis’ recruiters to shed light on what could have happened to Demafelis.
