A new flood forecasting system was installed at the town of Baler in Aurora province by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The early warning and monitoring system provides real-time data on weather, rainfall and water levels that are accessible to residents.

A network of four rainfall gauging stations, six water-level gauging stations, two automatic weather stations, one evaporation station and 15 global short messaging systems collects the data.

The system, which is also set up in the provinces of Iloilo and Lanao, costs a total of $1 million for all three areas. The project is funded by a grant from the South Korean government.
