Drug suspect dead, cop hurt in Cavite shootout

SAN PEDRO CITY–An illegal drug suspect was killed in a shootout with policemen in Bacoor City in Cavite province on Thursday (Feb. 15).

Supt. Chitadel Gaoiran, spokesperson of the police in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon (Calabarzon), said members of the Bacoor police went to the house of suspect Jay-Jay Mercado to implement a search warrant in relation to illegal drugs around 6:20 a.m. in Barangay (village) Talaba 2.

However, as the police knocked on the door, the suspect reportedly opened fire hitting Police Officer 1 Ashley Vergel.

Gaoiran said the police tried to negotiate for the suspect to surrender but the suspect continued to fire instead. The police shot back and killed the suspect.

Vergel was brought to the St. Dominic Medical Center in the city for treatment.
