IED abandoned near Davao checkpoint

DAVAO CITY – An improvised explosive device (IED) was found abandoned near the checkpoint of the Task Force Davao (TFD) in Barangay Lasang, Bunawan district in this city, a military official said on Friday.

TFD head Col. Nolasco Mempin said that the IED – which was allegedly similar to the ones being used by communist rebels – was found some two kilometers from the checkpoint.

Mempin also said that the IED was the manually-detonated type and its explosion could affect a radius of about 10 meters.

Mempin further described the IED as having a shrapnel, and fitted with a trigger mechanism.               /kga
