With the policemen’s salaries doubled, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) officer-in-charge Usec. Eduardo Año said lawmen were expected to strive more to battle illegal drugs in the country.

Año made the remark as he vowed the DILG and the National Police Commission (Napolcom) would monitor the relaunch of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) door-to-door “Oplan Tokhang.”

“Mas mabigat ang pananagutan ng mga pulis ngayon. Sa pagtaas ng kanilang sahod, dapat ay pagbutihin nila ang kanilang trabaho. Kung hindi maari silang masibak sa tungkulin,” Año said in a statement on Monday.

“Dapat doblehin rin ng PNP ang kanilang pagsisikap na tanggalin ang bulok na itlog sa kapulisan,” he said.

Año said he hoped the PNP would comply with its new guidelines in a bid to wage a less-bloody anti-drug campaign under the Duterte administration.

“Inaasahan namin na magiging gabay ng PNP ang bagong guidelines habang sinusuportahan nila ang Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) sa kampanya laban sa iligal na droga,” Año said in a statement on Monday.

“Ito (guidelines) ang susi sa tagumpay ng ating kampanya laban sa iligal na droga, lalo na kung susuportahan at susundin ito ng buong kapulisan,” said Año, who is also the Napolcom chair. /cbb
