Bongbong Marcos waxes Orwellian, demands for ‘damn’ recount; netizens react

Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son of the late former President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Sr., seemed like he couldn’t wait any longer for the recount of the vice presidential votes as he took to Twitter last Jan. 10 to demand for it.

The recount comes after Marcos’ poll protest versus vice president Leni Robredo’s win in the 2016 Philippine elections.

In Marcos’ tweet, he posted a quote of famed novelist George Orwell, which read, “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.”

Marcos also accompanied the quote with a hashtag: #StartTheDamnRecount.

As the post gained more and more traction, the public went straight to Marcos’ Twitter and tagged him personally in their replies.

Ganun siguro talaga.”

(Where do you get the nerve? Is it that hard to accept your loss? Your life must be sad sad sad. Well, it’s a family of thieves, murderers, and liars anyway. I guess it’s just really like that.)

Another Twitter user Gideon Peña (@gideonpena) posted a picture of Commission on Elections employees walking out of the COMELEC center during the quick count of votes in the 1986 snap elections. Peña pointed out that the COMELEC walkout was a revolutionary act.

To counter Marcos, a user posted a different quote from Orwell’s dystopian novel, “1984”: “We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it.” Another also called Marcos’ tweet ironic.

Netizen Bien King (@bienking) told Marcos that his tweet makes Orwell’s words meaningless: “Some might appreciate your ambition to lead the Filipino nation, but you are not our vice president.”

“And you never will be,” another added.

Meanwhile, Marcos uploaded the same poster-quote on his Instagram page, where most of his fans and followers offered their praise and support.

A well-wisher (@lhanrf.0724) wrote, “You are the Real VP of the Republic of the Philippines! Mabuhay po kayo!”

Another told Marcos that for them, he is the winner and their vice president. “Start the recount Sir..para makaupo ka na po as our Vice President. Panalo ka para sa amin BBM..we love you Sir.”

(Start the recount sir, so you can have the vice presidential seat. You are the winner for us. We love you sir.)

One also told Marcos he is praying for their family: “Praying for you BBM God Bless Marcos Family ! Start The Damn Recount.”

It is reported that the ballot recount will start on the second week of February. Just this morning, jeepneys containing the ballot boxes were spotted arriving at the Commission on Elections office in Camarines Sur.
