UST student council ‘strongly denounces’ Mocha Uson’s alumni award

The highest student government of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) “strongly denounced” on Sunday the decision of the UST Alumni Association Inc. (UST AAI) to give Margaux “Mocha” Uson an award for public service.

The UST Central Student Council (CSC) immediately responded to the action of UST AAI after it recognized Uson’s work as the Presidential Communications Operations Office assistant secretary.

“The UST CSC strongly denounces the UST Alumni Association Inc. (UST AAI) action of honoring Mocha Uson the Thomasian Award for Government Service,” UST CSC said in a statement.

The UST CSC also tagged the Government Service awardee as the “main purveyor of politically-motivated propaganda” against members of the government.

Mocha was also called “an avid spreader and citer of fake news” by the student council.

“Uson is also known to utilize her following to initiate blatant personal attacks her critics and the government’s, including students and members of the press, all under the guise of fake nationalism and freedom of speech,” the UST CSC added.

The university’s student government also expressed its dismay as Mocha, “does not, in any way, embody the ideals of a real Thomasian.”

“With all due respect, Ms. Esther Margaux Mocha Justiniano Uson, does not deserve an award that was supposed to be meant solely for outstanding Thomasian alumni,” the statement read.

With the high proliferation of fake news, the UST CSC then urged all Thomasians to fight against it and to continuously seek validation on the information they are given.

“We encourage everyone to be critical on every information they receive even if it hails from supposedly credible sources,” it said.

The student council then expressed support to the members of the media and condoned “all forms done by the state, aimed towards silencing and censoring the media.”

INQUIRER.net already has sent a message to Henry Tenedero, UST AAI President, for a statement regarding the decision but he has yet to respond. /je
