6 soldiers hurt in clash with Maute gunmen in Lanao del Sur

MARAWI CITY—Six soldiers were injured when government security forces clashed with suspected Maute gunmen in Masiu town, Lanao del Sur province on Saturday.

Colonel Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of the Joint Task Force Ranao, said the clash took place around 2 a.m. as the government continued to hunt down remnants of the Islamic State-inspired terror group, which laid siege to this city on May 23.

Masiu, about 54 kilometers from here, was among areas along Lake Lanao, where the Maute group had previously maintained a satellite camp, according to an earlier military report.

It was also where the Maute matriarch, Omenta Romato Maute, also known as Farhana, was arrested along with seven other women on June 9 while trying to smuggle high powered firearms out of Lanao del Sur. Richel Umel INQ
