Police at Singapore’s Changi Airport arrested a woman on Jan. 12 for not declaring that she had with her S$11,000 (around P423,000) worth of luxury goods upon arrival.
The 25-year-old woman, whose name was not disclosed, had with her bags, belts and other items bought from big fashion houses. She had flown in from Paris.
In a Facebook post by Singapore customs, the woman attempted to pass through the airport’s Customs Green Channel. She had not declared the bags and accessories she had with her, officials said.
According to the post, the woman may face a fraudulent evasion case as she violated the Customs Act and may be fined 20 times the amount of tax evaded. She may also serve two years in jail.
The country imposes a goods and services tax on most goods and services for domestic consumption.
“It is the responsibility of travelers to make an accurate and complete declaration of the taxable and dutiable items in their possession,” Singapore authorities said as a reminder to travelers. /ra
