Sixteen people have reportedly been killed from the persistent rains dumped by a tail-end of a cold front on some parts of the country.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesperson Mina Marasigan said four people from Tacloban City were killed due to landslides; four from Compostela Valley; two from Northern Samar; two from Lanao del Norte; one from Caramoan and three from Camarines Norte.
The tail-end of a cold front, which brings cloudy skies with scattered rains, has been affecting parts of the country since last week.
“Hindi porket walang bagyo ay ‘di na peligroso. Ang patuloy nag pag-uulan ay nagdulot ng landslide,” Marasigan said.
(Just because there’s no storm doesn’t mean there’s no danger. Continuous rains can cause landslides.)
A total of 17,794 families or 78,302 persons were affected in Bicol region and Eastern Visayas. Of these, 1,875 families or 7,937 persons are sheltered in evacuation centers.
Flooding was reported in 65 areas in Bicol region, Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas, but waters have reportedly subsided in 33 areas in Bicol region and Western Visayas.
The weather system also prompted class suspensions in parts of Northern Samar, Tacloban City, Leyte, Biliran, Eastern Samar and Compostela Valley. /je
