The management of Ninoy Aquino International Airport has lauded a porter who returned a pouch containing US$3,600 and other bills accidentally left by a Chinese student.
The Manila International Airport Authority said Edwin Cubacub, a pushcart retriever of D’Frada Allied Services, found a black pouch containing 36 pieces of US$100 bills, 640 Chinese Yuan and P3,400 on Wednesday morning at the Terminal 1 arrival area and quickly turned it over to a security guard.
The guard brought the pouch to the Airport Police Department.
APD officer Mark Anthony Lusergo said the identification card of the owner bore the name of Runze Shandong Zhao, a 23-year-old nursing student of Far Eastern University in Manila.
Lusergo the APD reached Zhao through one Linda Orosco, whose name and contact number they found written on a paper inside the pouch.
Zhao went to the APD office on Thursday evening to claim his pouch; he also thanked Cubacub for his honesty, adding that the money was intended for his (Zhao’s) tuition.
The student said he was in a hurry to leave the airport and accidentally left the pouch on top the pushcart he was using for his baggage.
MIAA general manager Ed Monreal, in a statement, said “there are still honest employees in the airport and we hope other employees will emulate the good deeds of Mr. Cubacub.”
Cubacub was cited by the MIAA in March last year for returning a Samsung tablet that he found at the parking lot of Terminal 1.
