PNP: Pay rise could make rogue cops think twice

The increase in the basic pay of Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel should hopefully make them think twice before turning rogue, a PNP official said.

“Personally, I think that policemen planning to engage in shenanigans and other questionable practices will really think, not only twice but thrice, about what they would lose if they (were) removed from the service,” Chief Supt. Joselito Vera-Cruz, executive officer of the PNP directorate for comptrollership, said in a press briefing on Thursday.

Joint Resolution No. 1, which President Duterte signed early this month, has authorized the increase in the base pay of military and uniformed personnel, with the lowest ranking policemen receiving double their basic pay this year.

Doubled salary

Police officers 1 (PO1) will receive P29,668 monthly starting this month, double their previous salary of P14,834.

Police officers 2 will be getting P30,867 and police officers 3, P32,114.

A senior police officer 1 will receive P33,411; a senior police officer 2, P34,079; a senior police officer 3, P34,761, and a senior police officer 4, P35,456.

An inspector (or police lieutenant) will be getting P43,685 monthly; a senior inspector (police captain), P49,801; a chief inspector (police major), P54,799; a superintendent (police lieutenant colonel), P61,375; a senior superintendent (police colonel), P68,740; a chief superintendent (police general) P76,989; a police director (two-star general), P86,228, and a police deputy director general (three-star general) P108,164.

79-percent increase

The police director general, a rank reserved for the PNP chief, will be getting a monthly salary of P121,143—a 79 percent increase from the current P67,500 modified base pay.

If he does not retire this year as scheduled, PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa’s pay would be raised to P149,785 in 2019.

There will no longer be salary increases for police personnel with the rank of PO1, PO2, PO3, SPO1, SPO2 and SPO3 in 2019.

But an SPO4 will be given a basic monthly salary of P38,366, an inspector will be paid P49,528, a senior inspector, P56,582; a chief inspector, P62,555; a superintendent, P71,313; a senior superintendent, P80,583; a chief superintendent, P91,508; a police director, P102,896; and a police deputy director general, P125,574. —WITH A REPORT FROM PATHRICIA ANN V.
