OFW who had just returned to his hometown in Davao shot dead

TAGUM CITY — Motorcycle-riding gunmen shot and killed an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who had recently returned home in Mati City, Davao Oriental, police said on Saturday.

Junifer Paredes died upon arrival at a local hospital after being attacked by armed assailants in Dahican village around 5 p.m. on Friday, Chief Insp. Andrea dela Cerna, the Southern Mindanao police spokesperson, said.

Paredes, of legal age and a resident of Martinez Subdivision in Dahican, was heading home onboard his car when fired at several times by two suspects on a motorbike, Dela Cerna said.

The perpetrators then sped away to an unknown direction.

Relatives rushed the victim to Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital for treatment but attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Responding policemen recovered at the crime scene several spent shells from a cal. 45 pistol, Dela Cerna said.

She said Paredes had worked as an engineer in Saudi Arabia and had just returned to the country.

Dela Cerna said an investigation into the motive and identities of the suspects behind the engineer’s murder was underway.
