Police see no threats to Black Nazarene procession

Intelligence units have not monitored any threats to the Black Nazarene procession on Jan. 9, the Manila Police District (MPD) chief said Thursday.

“There is no actual, direct or imminent constituting prominent threat concerning the Traslacion,” Chief Supt. Joel Coronel said in a press briefing, five days before the event anticipated by millions of devotees.

Coronel added that more than 7,000 uniformed personnel would be on the ground on Tuesday to ensure the safety of the devotees and participants.

“Continuous ang monitoring ng intelligence agencies… Pero hinihikayat namin ang lahat, if you see something say something,” he added.

The week-long rites that started last Dec. 31 and will culminate on Tuesday with the Traslacion, which recalls the transfer on Jan. 9, 1787, of a copy of the image of the Black Nazarene from its original site at the San Nicolas Tolentino church in Intramuros to the Quiapo church. /cbb
