Church burglar shot dead by security guard

LUCENA CITY – A man who allegedly stole donation money from a Catholic church in Tayabas City in Quezon province was shot dead by a security guard early Tuesday, police said.

Report from Quezon police quoting Fr. Romel Ansay, parish priest of Minor Basilica of St. Michael church, said the still unidentified robber broke into church in the town proper at about 1:55 a.m. and took a donation box containing P12,111 in cash and coins.

Police said the church security guard, who was not identified in the report, caught the suspect carrying the donation box. The guard confronted the robber who allegedly tried to grab his caliber .38 revolver.

During the scuffle, the guard accidentally shot the thief in his head, killing him instantly, the report said.

Police described the suspect as 25 to 30 years old, wearing a black shirt and white denim shorts. /cbb
