Miguel Lopez de Legazpi established Cebu (then a municipality) in Cebu province and named it “Villa del Santisimo Nombre de Jesus,” or Town of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. On Feb. 24, 1937, Cebu became a city by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 58. It has since grown to become a highly urbanized city, with a population of 922,611 in 2015.

The town of Naujan, one of the oldest towns in Oriental Mindoro province, was established under Act No. 1280. Naujan came from the word “na-uhao,” or “got thirsty.” It is the largest municipality in Oriental Mindoro in terms of land area, as it accounts for 12 percent of the province’s total land area. The town’s population in 2015 was 102,998.
