Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista has reminded the public that giving and selling firecrackers to children are prohibited in the city.
“Quezon City is a child-friendly city that’s why we have regulations like this to protect our young residents,” Bautista said in a statement on Friday.
Bautista cited City Ordinance 2587-2017, which aims to “reduce, if not eradicate, accidents and injuries sustained by children due to firecrackers.”
The ordinance was introduced by Councilor Allan Benedict S. Reyes and approved on August 9, 2017.
“Records show that there are considerable number of accidents and injuries due to firecrackers, many of which are suffered by children,” Bautista said.
The city ordinance specified the following types of firecrackers as covered by the regulation: baby rocket, bawang, small triangulo, pulling of strings, paper caps, el diablo, watusi, Judah’s belt, sky rocket (kwitis), piccolo and any other type of firecrackers mentioned in Republic Act No. 7183.
Under the ordinance, violators will face imprisonment of one year or a fine of P5,000, or both at the discretion of the court. /jpv
