Marawi shelters have electricity, water — Roque

The government has finished 800 shelters for Marawi City residents displaced by the war earlier this year. President Rodrigo Duterte will turn to evacuees over 500 units of the shelters in Barangay Sagongsongan.

The housing units set to be turned over by President Rodrigo Duterte to displaced Marawi City residents will come with electricity and water, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Wednesday.

“This is only the first temporary units that we will be transferring as promised to the people of Marawi,” Roque said, referring to 500 shelters in Barangay Sagonsongan set for hand over to Marawi folk left homeless by five months of fighting in the Islamic city.

Roque told reporters during a press briefing at the provincial capitol in Marawi that the President would hand over the housing units anytime Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017.

He said the units would have amenities such as electricity and water.

Marawi Mayor Majul Gandamra said 98,000 families that returned home after the military allowed resettlement in areas outside of the main battle area were not among the beneficiaries of the units.

He said these early returnees did not totally lose their homes or their villages were largely untouched by the violence that flared up on May 23. /cbb
