The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to buy 10 thermal cameras in 2018 to install on Edsa as part of its efforts to improve its no-contact apprehension policy and the implementation of the “high-occupancy vehicle” (HOV) lane.

According to Jojo Garcia, MMDA assistant general manager for planning, the cameras will make it easier for them to spot motorists who violate the use of the HOV lane, the leftmost lane on Edsa.

Earlier, the MMDA announced that it would extend the trial run of the HOV lane until the first week of January. Garcia said that this would help them gather more data, especially since of the 27,524 vehicles which used the HOV lane last week, 14,645 had heavily tinted windows, making it impossible to check if their drivers complied with the policy.

Motorists can only use the HOV lane if they are with two or more people in a vehicle.
