AFP allays fears on Mindanao martial law: ‘We are worthy of people’s trust’

The Armed Forces of the Philippines is “worthy of the people’s trust.”

This was the message of AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero to the public, as he tried to allay apprehensions amid the extended martial law in Mindanao.

“Somehow palagay ko naman we have proven ourselves worthy of the people’s trust. We have always been professional in our conduct, we have always extended efforts to make sure that we are accountable and responsible for our actions,” he told reporters in a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in the entire Mindanao last May 23 when the terrorist Maute Group attacked Marawi City. The 60-day promulgation ended last July 22 but was later extended by Congress until December 31, 2017.

On Wednesday, Congress overwhelmingly approved Mr. Duterte’s request to extend martial law in Mindanao for another year – from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, citing the need to wipe out terrorism in the region.

Guerrero said the complaints on human rights violations are already likely resolved in the local level.

“Meron tayong Commission on Human Rights ‘di ba, so they are accepting itong mga complaints, reports and abuses. On the part of the AFP we also have a set of our own mechanmism on how to check the discipline and misconduct ng ating mga soldiers,” he said.

The AFP chief said they have been “faithful and committed” in performing their mandate, especially in the protection of human rights and observance of law.           /kga
