CEBU CITY, Philippines—A week-old infant was abandoned by a mother described to be in her teens in a bus bound for this city.

A passenger, Arlene Ortega, told authorities she was seated beside the young woman who was breast-feeding her baby in the bus. Ortega was quoted as saying the young woman asked her to look after the baby and left her seat as the bus stopped in Bogo City.

The still unidentified woman didn’t return, forcing Ortega to take the baby and turn it over to Patria de Cebu, a Church-owned establishment in Barangay Sto. Niño here.

Village captain Pancho Ramirez turned the baby over to Cebu City Medical Center. It was turned over later to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
