MANILA, Philippines–Hazy roads greeted motorists in Quezon City Wednesday morning, which the weather bureau said was caused by smog, a combination of smoke and fog.
The cold weather which caused the formation of fog was not due to the amihan or northeast monsoon, but was due to the rains being experienced in Metro Manila for a whole day, which caused a drop in temperature, according to forecaster Raymond Ordinario of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
Since the temperature on the ground was too cold, there was an immediate condensation of the water vapor, which did not rise and formed a cloudlike fog on the ground, Ordinario explained.
Sightings of the smog was reported on Commonwealth Avenue and East Avenue in Quezon City.
He said that if the sun shines today, no fog could be expected tomorrow or in the coming days.
The amihan, which brings the cold, dry air from Siberia into the country, is expected to arrive in about a couple of weeks.
