FDA warns public on proliferation of fake shampoo products

Be careful of reaching for that shampoo—it might not be the real deal.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday warned the public against using fake versions of two popular shampoo products that are being sold in the country.

In its advisory, the FDA cautioned the public on the proliferation of counterfeit versions of Dove Nutritive Solutions Oxygen and Nourishment Shampoo; and Tresemme Smooth and Shine Shampoo.

“The FDA, in coordination with the Market Authorization Holder, Unilever Philippines Inc., has verified that the aforementioned cosmetic products are counterfeit,” it said.

The agency warned consumers against buying and using these fake products since these have not undergone the required safety assessment and verification of the FDA.

“In light of the above, the public is advised to be vigilant against buying and using the aforementioned counterfeit cosmetic products,” it said.

The advisory was issued a day after the agency released a similar warning on fake medicines and other health products flooding the Philippine market.

The FDA pointed out that the use of substandard and possibly adulterated cosmetic products may lead to adverse reactions such as skin irritation, itchiness, anaphylactic shock and organ failure.

“Counterfeit products, not having gone through the required safety assessment and the verification process of the FDA, pose potential health hazards to the consuming public,” the FDA stressed.

The agency urged the public to be vigilant against fake products by checking it first with the FDA through its website, www.fda.gov.ph.

“All concerned establishments are warned not to distribute the above-identified violative cosmetic products, otherwise regulatory actions and sanctions shall be strictly pursued,” it added. /jpv
