‘Negros Cares’ launched to aid Marawi

BACOLOD CITY — Whether they could shell only P1 or P1 million, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. urged residents in his province to contribute to help rebuild Marawi City, which was ravaged by the five-month fighting between government troops and terrorists.

Marañon last week invited Negrenses from all walks of life to join the campaign to raise funds for the reconstruction of Marawi as the provincial government launched “Negros Cares.”

“The donations can be from millions of pesos to even just P1 each as long as everybody chips in to help the people of Marawi rise from the devastation,” he said.

The campaign, he said, was supported by local governments in Negros Occidental.

Marañon said he would also seek the assistance of the Catholic Church, religious leaders, nongovernment organizations, private sector, local shopping malls and the sugar industry in the campaign.

A community in Marawi would be chosen for rehabilitation using funds raised by Negros Occidental, he said. —Carla P. Gomez
