Soldier killed, another hurt by suspected rebels near Ilocos Sur school
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A soldier was killed while another was injured when armed men believed to be communist rebels attacked them at an elementary school in Quirino town in Ilocos Sur on Saturday (Oct. 15), according to a belated report from the Army’s Northern Luzon Command in Tarlac.
The soldiers were members of the 81st Infantry Battalion, who were helping with chores at a Patiacan village school as part of a community development support program. They were shot at 4 p.m. allegedly by members of the New Peoples Army’s KLG Montes Unit.
The names of the soldiers were not released at press time. One of them died on the way to the Quirino Primary Health Care Center at 6:50 p.m. from a fatal neck wound. The other soldier is undergoing treatment and was in a stable condition.
