Mining consultant hurt in slay attempt in Mati
TAGUM CITY—A retired army officer who is serving as provincial mining consultant was wounded after being shot by unidentified assailants in Mati City, Davao Oriental on Friday night, police on Saturday said.
Police Chief Inspector Andrea dela Cerna, Southern Mindanao regional police spokesperson, identified the victim as retired Philippine Army Colonel Dante Ganir.
Ganir was outside his house in Barangay (Village) Dahican when armed men attacked him around 7:30 p.m., dela Cerna said.
The attackers fled to an unknown direction after the shooting as relatives rushed the victim to the nearest hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds, police said.
Pieces of spent shells from cal. 45 pistol were recovered by police at the crime scene.
Prior to his stint as mining consultant, Ganir was the former provincial environment and natural resources officer (Penro) for Davao Oriental.
He replaced as Penro another former military officer, retired Colonel Eulogio Baltazar, who was murdered in Mati in 2009.
Dela Cerna said police investigators are now conducting a follow up on the case. /jpv
