CHARGED FOR CUTTING TREES

CHARGES were filed in court against three persons for cutting down trees in barangay Manipis, Talisay City.

Rosalia Galopo, Fernan Galopo, and Leovigildo Togonon were accused of violating  Presidential  Decree  705 or the Forestry Reform Code of the Philippines.

Bail was recommended at P12,000 each.

Talisay City Assistant Prosecutor Floralil Lucero-Albert found probable cause to indict the three accused who allegedly cut down 24 pieces of Teak trees last Jan. 25.

The trees were valued at P9,579.60.

The trees were allegedly cut and sawn into pieces of lumber to be used to construct the house of Rosalia and her son Fernan.

Togonon, for his part, admitted Rosalia sought his permission to cut down trees in the area.

He said there was nothing illegal in cutting down trees since Rosalia is a member of the Community Based Forest Management Strategy which is allegedly entitled to some incentives.

One of the privileges, he said, is to utilize the resources that Rosalia managed and developed within her area.

However, the prosecutor found sufficient basis to elevate the case to the court which shall conduct a full-blown trial against the accused./REPORTER ADOR VINCENT S. MAYOL

FIL-AM FOUND DEAD

A 77-YEAR-OLD Filipino-American was found dead inside a pension house in barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, last Saturday night.

Raul Kapuno was found slumped on the floor of his room of the Citi Pension House.

Police said Kapuno had no external injuries that would indicate that there was a foul play involved in his death.

There were also no signs of struggle in the room, said police.

Timoteo Remedio, owner of the pension house, said he smelled foul odor coming from Kapuno’s room that prompted him to check on him./CORRESPONDENT RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

FIRE HITS CEBU CITY BUILDING

A FIRE struck a two-story commercial building on N. Bacalso Avenue, Cebu City Saturday night.

The fire started at the ground floor of the building occupied by Stickerworld Advertising.  The fire started at 11:13 p.m. and was contained in seven minutes, said Cebu City Fire Marshal Aderson Comar.
