Buhay Rep. Lito Atienza has urged his colleagues to lower the age bracket of beneficiaries of P100,000 incentive as mandated by the Centenarians Act of 2016.

Ibigay natin habang sila ay buhay pa,” Atienza said in response to a privilege speech delivered by Senior Citizen Rep. Francisco Datol Jr. on Monday.

Last year, former President Benigno Aquino III signed the Republic Act No. 10868, a measure granting additional benefits for centenarians, more than three years after he vetoed an earlier version of the bill.

According to his research, Atienza said that out of 3,900 centenarians in the country, only 2,000 are able to receive the P100,000 bonus allotted for them.

“Why? Ayaw namang ibigay sa mga kamag-anak,” the lawmaker said.

Consequently, Atienza suggested to lower the age bracket of the law’s beneficiaries from 100 years old to 90 years old.

Atienza has also proposed that senior citizens, or elderly aged 60 years old and up, be given 50 percent discount on flight fares.

Following this, Datol backed Atienza’s recommendations.
