SAN PEDRO CITY–The municipal government of Odiongan in Romblon province will lead the lighting of candles Thursday as they remember the victims of state atrocities.

But Odiongan mayor Trina Firmalo said the activity was not in any way meant to oppose President Rodrigo Duterte’s programs, particularly his campaign against illegal drugs which critics blame for the thousands of deaths during police operations.

She said they also wish to remember those who had died during the Marcos dictatorship.

Firmalo, who is also the daughter of Romblon Governor Eduardo Firmalo, said the issue on extrajudicial killings nowadays has become “very tricky with comments coming from both sides (pro and anti the Duterte administration).”

But the stand of the local government unit is rather for law enforcers to observe due process and the promotion of the right to life, she said.

Firmalo said the candle lighting will be held at 5 p.m. at the Children’s Park and Playground in front of the municipal hall.

“I invited everyone (in the municipal government) but they’re not required to attend. It’s really just a small activity and anyone can join,” she said.
