LEGAZPI CITY—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) lifted on Friday afternoon the tsunami advisory earlier issued following the Mexico 8.2-magnitude earthquake.

Phivolcs has cancelled its sea-level change monitoring about three hours the issued advisory noontime Friday.
In its advisory at 1:09 p.m., Phivolcs said the magnitude 8.2 earthquake that hit off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico at about 12:49 p.m., had the potential to generate a destructive tsunami.
About 21 provinces in the country, including the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur and Norte, were advised to “wait and listen for updates.”
At 3:29 p.m., Phivolcs released another advisory stating a cancellation of sea-level change monitoring. It said that “based on all available data, there is no destructive tsunami threat to Philippines associated with this event.”
Earlier this afternoon, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) alerted the disaster councils of the provinces to be on high alert and closely monitor possible sea level rising in their respective shorelines, Cherry Ann Balingit, OCD administration chief said.
Although there was “no evacuation order,” coastal communities in the eastern seaboard of Bicol fronting the Pacific Ocean were advised to be on the lookout. JPV
