Road repairs in QC, Pasig, Caloocan this long weekend
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Friday advised motorists to use alternate routes as several roads in Quezon City, Pasig and Caloocan undergo repairs this weekend. The repairs, which were set to start on Friday night, will affect the second lane, southbound direction of A. Bonifacio Avenue from Dome Street to Sgt. Rivera; second lane, southbound, of Mindanao Avenue after Tandang Sora fronting Shell; third lane, southbound direction of Edsa from Kaingin Road to Dario Bridge; truck lane, southbound direction of E. Rodriguez Avenue after Greenmeadows Avenue and after Boni Serrano; northbound direction of CP Garcia Avenue near E. Jacinto Street and between Velasquez and Alley; northbound direction of V. Luna Road from East Avenue to Kalayaan Avenue; and second lane, northbound, of Quirino Highway corner La Mesa Dam Road. The southbound direction of C-5 Road near Julia Vargas and northbound direction of Manila East Road in front of SM East Ortigas in Pasig are up for repairs . In Caloocan, work will be on a section of MacArthur Highway’s northbound lane near Monumento Circle. The repairs are expected to be completed by 5 a.m. on Monday.—TINA G. SANTOS
‘Healthy’ senior dies after 10 days in Parañaque jail
Ten days after being arrested, a senior citizen died inside the overcrowded custodial facility of the Parañaque City police on Wednesday night. Based on initial findings, Jesus Cesar Torrevillas died of a heart attack, according to Senior Insp. Jerry Sunga, the chief investigator. Sunga noted that Torrevillas, 65, was considered “healthy” based on his mandatory medical checkup prior to detention. A jail guard, PO2 Sirly Ngayaan, said that shortly before Torrevillas died, he was “pale, trembling and breathing heavily” at a corner of the cell on the fifth floor of the Parañaque Central Fire Station on Dr. A. Santos Avenue, Barangay San Dionisio. Sunga conceded that, given the detainee’s age, the jail congestion may have taken its toll on Torrevillas, an Airport Village resident who was arrested for physical injuries and illegal possession of a bladed weapon on Aug. 20. As of Friday, the 40-square-meter facility that was intended for a maximum of 35 persons was packed with 192 detainees.—DEXTER CABALZA
QC mom seeks help for son’s dialysis

Timothy Ryan Dioce was born premature, which is why his kidneys did not grow to normal size. “When he turned 17 in 2015, doctors advised us that he must undergo hemodialysis because his kidneys were too small to function normally,” his mother, Sarah Jane, said. At that time, Timothy was in third year high school. His condition caused his body to swell and made him weak, forcing him to drop out of school. Now aged 20, Timothy undergoes hemodialysis thrice a week at East Avenue Medical Center. “He still dreams of finishing school. He has tried twice to enroll but his body is just too weak,” Sarah Jane said. A single parent residing on Muñoz Street, Carmel V, Tandang Sora, Quezon City, she admitted there were times she got frustrated. “I feel like I have not done anything to help prolong Timothy’s life,” she said. She appealed to Inquirer readers for help in shouldering her son’s dialysis fee of P9,000 a week.
