ILOILO CITY — A Chinese vehicle manufacturing firm will study a plan for a monorail system in Metro Iloilo as part of efforts to put up a reliable and fast mass transport system and lessen traffic congestion in this economic hub in Western Visayas.

The city government, represented by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, and BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd. recently signed a memorandum of understanding for the conduct of a prefeasibility study.

The study will be conducted cost-free to the city government and will be undertaken for about two months, according to Benjamin Zhao, BYD senior regional manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto sales division.

The initial plan is to put up the monorail system from Iloilo City to the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan town, about 20 kilometers away. Nestor P. Burgos Jr.
