Troops retake Marawi City police station

Combined government forces have regained control of the police station in Marawi City located in the main battle area, the military said on Thursday.

The police station, which was retaken on Wednesday, is considered a “strategic location” in the ongoing gunbattle, said Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla.

“Nakuha na po ng ating mga pwersa ang police station ng Marawi na isa sa mga unang sinakalay at nakuha ng mga terorista at rebeldeng Maute,” he said.

Clearing operations continue to recover the Grand Mosque believed to be one of the Maute Group’s main staging positions, the military said.

About 300 buildings and establishments have yet to be cleared before the government will take back its control of Marawi City, Padilla said.

The gunbattle between Maute Group and government forces reached its third month last Wednesday.
