ORMOC CITY, Leyte—Soldiers belonging to the 78th Infantry Battalion overran a camp of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Tuesday morning following a 20-minute gunfight with communist rebels in Barauen town, about 80 km from here.
No one was reported hurt in the government side, said Lt. Col Danilo Dupiag, 78th IB commander.
He said his men were conducting foot patrol in Baragay Roxas, Burauen, Leyte when they stumbled upon an NPA camp.
A gunfight ensued that lasted for 20 minutes before the communist rebels retreated to the forest.
Dupiag said his men might have hit some rebels based on the bloodstains on the area.
Found inside the camp were one sack of rice and one backpack containing subversive documents and personal belongings of the rebels. JE
