Comelec chief Bautista open to inquiry, may quit if…

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres J. Bautista welcomes any inquiry into the allegations raised by his wife that he has amassed P1 billion in ill-gotten wealth.

“I am open to any inquiry. If it is a legislative inquiry, no problem,” Bautista told reporters Monday.

At a press conference, Bautista denied the allegations made by his wife Patricia, saying most of the documents were fabricated.

He said even a resignation is a possibility if he believes that the Comelec, which he headed, is suffering because of the controversies he is facing.

“It [resignation] has been at the back of my head,” Bautista said.

Bautista said he met with President Rodrigo Duterte last Aug. 1 who tried to mediate with his marital spat.

“He [the President] provided us with good advice,” Bautista said.

He said he told the President that he is willing to resign but quoting the President, he said “I am not asking you to resign [because] that is really your call.”

Bautista said his wife left him years ago for another man.

“I want to preserve my family. I want to protect my children,” he said.
