Several subdivisions in Cainta town in Rizal province and parts of Cavite province were submerged in floodwater that rose to as high as five feet in some areas, following two days of intermittent but widespread heavy rain.
In Cainta, water rose to about five feet at the height of the downpour that started early Wednesday. The situation was aggravated when the Manggahan Floodway opened its eight flood gates diverting water from the Marikina River to Cainta.
Among the affected subdivisions were Gruar, Village East, CVS Homes, Vista Verde, Kasibulan, Karangalan, and Green Park, all along Felix Avenue. Also hit was Park Place Subdivision along Ortigas Avenue.
The communities lie in the catch basin where rain water from Antipolo City and other upland areas of Rizal flow.
Eric Arevalo, Cainta Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) officer, said water started to subside as the weather improved Thursday noon.
He said they did not need to evacuate residents.
“Residents have become used to the frequent flooding. What we are more concerned of is earthquake as we are too close to the Marikina fault line,” he said.
Loel Malonzo, Rizal DRRM chief, said parts of the Taytay town center also experienced flooding.
Classes in Cainta, Taytay and several other towns in Rizal were suspended Wednesday and Thursday due to rain brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat.
In Antipolo City, at least 24 residents were evacuated from flood and landslide prone areas to the Muntingdilaw National High School on Wednesday.
Relly Bernardo, city DRRM officer, said the evacuees were allowed to return home on Thursday.
In Cavite, Gov. Jesus Crispin Remulla said ankle-deep flood hit parts of Cavite City on Thursday. CBB
