A policeman was killed while three others were wounded in an encounter with communist rebels in Pangasinan on Friday morning.
Police Chief Insp. Norman Florentino, of the Pangasinan provincial police, said the Regional Public Safety Battalion 1 was conducting “a major combat operation” when the firefight broke out at around 9:30 a.m. near the boundary of Barangays Sta. Maria and Malica in San Nicolas town.
The Philippine National Police has yet to divulge the name of the killed policeman and the three wounded officers.
Florentino also said that the police still have no information on the casualties on the communists’ side.
Additional teams have deployed to conduct reinforcements, a separate police report said.
Lt. Col. Isagani Nato of the Northern Luzon Command, meanwhile, said Army troops are also helping out in pursuing the communist rebels. Frances Mangosing / JPV
