Barangay nutrition scholars (BNS) from the provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor attended their 7th Regional Congress in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental last Nov. 7 and 8.
The congress, with its theme “Developing capacities of BNS to overcome challenges” was organized by the National Nutrition Council in Central Visayas, through the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association.
Silliman University played host to the congress on Nov. 7 at the Negros Oriental Convention Center.
Negros Oriental 1st district Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong was the keynote speaker. Topics were food safety, community health team, strengthening the capacities of BNS, and the proposed Magna Carta for BNS.
Resource speakers also included Michelle Naranjo of Silliman University, Dr. Ma. Socorro Entera of Department of Health and Dhaianne Laborte from Cebu.
The annual gathering of nutrition workers aimed to update the scholars with new information on nutrition and in implemenng health and nutrition services at the grassroots level.
The congress also featured the crowning of new Mutya ng BNS 2011 from among the participants.
The next scholar will continue the role of being the Ambassador of Goodwill for all BNS regionwide.
In last year’s congress, Rowena Bautista Dilao of Cebu City was crowned Mutya ng BNS.
