An impeachment trial against Vice President Leni Robredo and Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno will only be a waste of time for the Senate, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan said on Wednesday.
“It will be a waste of our time in the Senate. Sasayangin lang ang oras namin sa Senado,” Pangilinan, the president of the Liberal Party, said in a text message.
The senator was reacting to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez’ statement that he was collecting evidence to build possible impeachment cases against Robredo and Sereno.
This will be tackled once the second regular session of the 17th Congress resumes on July 24.
“That’s why this second year of Congress may become more colorful,” Alvarez told Inquirer.
“Before I file that, I need to complete all the supporting documents. Like the case with the Chief Justice, once the documents are ready, I will not hesitate to file,” he said.

Alvarez earlier said Robredo could be held liable for “betraying public trust” when she criticized President Duterte’s drug war in a video message addressing foreign delegates attending a United Nations-sponsored convention in February.
Sereno, meanwhile, will be investigated for allegedly trying to influence the Court of Appeals (CA) magistrates to defy the House in the case of six Ilocos Norte officials who were cited in contempt and placed under House custody in May. JE
