Murder suspect killed, cop hurt in Laguna shootout

SAN PEDRO CITY, Philippines—A man facing murder charges was killed while a policeman was wounded in a shootout in Calamba City in Laguna province early Monday.

According to a report from the Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon (Calabarzon) police, Oleodie “Toto” Paner of Barangay (village) Lecheria was being served an arrest warrant issued by Judge Glenda Ramos of the Regional Trial Court Branch 36 in Calamba City when the shootout happened shortly past midnight in the said village.

The suspect, however, allegedly fired his gun in an attempt to resist arrest and wounded Police Officer 2 Edmond Maranan on his left leg. Maranan was taken to the JP Rizal Hospital in the city for treatment.

Paner was killed on the spot by the authorities, who shot back. /ra
