CITY OF CALAPAN – A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu), now known as the Cafgu Active Auxiliary (CAA), shot dead a soldier and a fellow Cafgu on Wednesday night at a military base in
Gloria town in Oriental Mindoro, police said Thursday.
Senior Supt. Christopher Biruing, provincial director of Oriental Mindoro police, said victims Staff Sgt. Arnaldo Felix, 41, a native of Lingayen, Pangasinan but residing at Barangay (village) Alcate, Victoria town, also in Oriental Mindoro, and Cafgu Richard Hernandez, a resident of Barangay Manguyang, also in Gloria town, were killed by Jerland Eulogio, 28, a resident of Sitio (sub-village) Dau, Barangay Narra, in an incident at around 9 p.m. at Philippine Army’s Mirayan Patrol Base 203rd Infantry Brigade in Barangay Mirayan.
Senior Police Officer 1 Johnny M Olivar, case investigator, said that Felix and Hernandez and a group of CAA members were in the mess hall when they heard a gunshot.
The men rushed to a neighboring nipa hut to get their issued firearms before looking into the source of the gunshot while their other companions ran to the trenches and their designated posts.
Felix shouted “Ano yan? (What is that?)” before more gunshots were fired at their direction.
Eulogio was seen already positioned at the front door carrying his service firearm, a carbine M2.
When the gun fires subsided, Felix and Hernandez were found bleeding.
Both victims died while being taken to Pinamalayan community hospitals.
Eulogio was arrested by Gloria police.
Witnesses Jervin Merida Montarin and Johnadel Perez, both CAA members, said Eulogio was seen drinking in his nipa hut with Julius Ivan Ceazar Manrique Saet prior to the shooting.
