ZARAGOZA, Nueva Ecija — Workers and bomb disposal teams from the Philippine Army have dug up 79 mortar rounds inside the town hall compound in Barangay (village) Gen. Luna where they have been constructing an evacuation center over the weekend, police said.

Rogelio Caliboso, a 39-year-old construction worker, said they were digging a hole for a foundation post when they found 31 shells at about 8 a.m. on Saturday (June 24).

Informed about the discovery, the explosives and ordnance division (EOD) of the Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry Division took custody of the shells and unearthed 48 more shells on Sunday (June 25).

Bomb experts are examining the shells at Fort Magsaysay in Palayan City, and have yet to determine why these were buried here.  SFM/rga
