JBC accepting applications for Sandiganbayan associate justice post

The Judicial and Bar Council is accepting applications and recommendations for a vacancy at the Sandiganbayan with the retirement of associate justice Rodolfo Ponferrada in two months.

In an announcement, the JBC said Ponferrada will compulsorily retire from government service on September 13 upon reaching the age of 70.

Ponferrada is one of the 16 associate justices of the anti-graft court, which currently has four vacancies for the post of associate justice.

The JBC is accepting applications in duplicate at the JBC office, Supreme Court, Padre Faura Street in Manila until July 17.

Applications sent through email or fax will not be acted upon.

Born on September 13, 1947, Ponferrada was appointed to the Sandiganbayan in August 2004.

He is chairperson of the Sandiganbayan’s sixth division, which handles the technical malversation case against then San Juan City mayor and now Sen. JV Ejercito et al.

The retiring associate justice also used to be part of the anti-graft court’s first division, which handled the pork barrel scam charges against ex-Sen. Bong Revilla.

A graduate of the San Beda College of Law, Ponferrada passed the Bar in 1971. He served in the National Prosecution Service as chief of the prosecution division before he was appointed as a judge.

Ponferrada was a judge of the Manila regional trial court prior to his appointment to the country’s anti-graft court.
