On May 31, 1764, after ruling the City of Manila for almost one year and eight months, British forces surrendered the city to the Spanish leader Simon de Anda who had been fighting them since their takeover in 1762. Anda officially became the governor general of the Philippines in 1769. He served from July 1770 until his death in 1776. A monument in Port Area, Manila, was erected in his honor. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
