QC folk fish out ‘hero’

He might have been mentally challenged, but he died a hero.

A 38-year-old man died after saving a child from drowning in a creek in Quezon City over the weekend.

Residents fished out the victim, Jun Josef, from the Sapang Bato creek in Barangay Bagumbayan early Monday morning after children noticed his body in the water.

Investigator PO3 Gregorio Maramag of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said Josef was a resident of JP Rizal Street in Lamuan, Marikina City.

He went missing Saturday afternoon, according to his 46-year-old brother, Rolando.

According to Rolando, Josef jumped into a river in Marikina to save a drowning child at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Josef was able to grab the child and push the boy to safety but the man himself failed to surface.

On Monday, children playing along Sapang Bato creek noticed the body at around 7 a.m.

Maramag said Josef’s body was already bloated when found but Rolando managed to identify it through the t-shirt that he was wearing.
