Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Eduardo Año will have to extend for another six months instead of taking over as Interior Secretary, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Wednesday.

“Año is supposed to retire next week but I said it’s not good to be changing horses midstream,” Duterte said during a press briefing upon his arrival in Manila from Russia.

“He is extended in his tour of duty for another six months,” Duterte said. “And after that we will review.”

Año was supposed to retire early and take over as head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Nevertheless, Duterte said Año will eventually take over the post because of problems within the police force.

He said some policemen have become scalawags “because of the lure of money.”

Duterte said there are syndicates from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Highway Patrol group, as well as other stations. /atm
