The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has already filed with the Department of Justice (DOJ) a criminal complaint against five South Koreans involved in online illegal gambling operation in Pasig City.
NBI Director Dante A. Gierran said a case for violation of Presidential Decree (PD) 1602 (Prescribing Stiffer Penalties on Illegal Gambling) in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012) had been filed against Cheonji Kim, Ilhwan Yang, Wonsup Yang, Jeong Hyeok Kim and Moon Kyu Kang.
They were taken to the DOJ for inquest proceedings.
The NBI said the arrested South Koreans either operated or managed a web page for online sports betting, sports toto, and online casino.
Guierran said they also facilitated money laundering activities. He added that they chose exclusive subdivisions as their operation venue to hide from the law enforcers.
The complaint filed against them has an expected penalty of prision mayor or six years and one day to 12 years in prison if found guilty in court. –Tetch Torres-Tupas /atm
