DID YOU KNOW: Death anniversary of National Artist Daisy H. Avellana

Today, May 12, is the fourth death anniversary of National Artist for Theater Daisy H. Avellana. Born on Jan. 26, 1917, Avellana was a pioneering actress, director and writer. She made notable contributions to the modern Filipino theater, including being one of the co-founders of the Barangay Theater Guild (BTG) in 1939. She was conferred the title of National Artist in 1999. The last production of BTG in 2006 was directed by Avellana. She died in 2013 at the age of 96. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
