DID YOU KNOW: Gregoria de Jesus

Today, May 9, is the 142nd birth anniversary of Gregoria de Jesus, the “Lakambini (Muse) of the Katipunan.” Born in 1875 in what is now Caloocan, she became the wife of Katipunan founder Andres Bonifacio and headed the women’s chapter of the secret society, serving as the custodian of its documents and seals. After Bonifacio’s death, she married Julio Nakpil, a Katipunan general. Their eight children include National Artist for Architecture Juan F. Nakpil. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
