Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada on Wednesday led the inauguration of the renovated Quinta Market in Quiapo, a P150-million project that aimed to boost business and expand trade in the district with the addition of a new fish port and ferry terminal.

“This is what we’ve been envisioning – a modern, convenient, and mall-like public market both accessible by land and Pasig River,” said Estrada during the inauguration ceremonies, which coincided with his 80th birthday.

“With a fish port and ferry terminal nearby, we will be able to attract traders and consumers from Metro Manila and nearby provinces, thus, boosting business in Quiapo and in the city as a whole,” he added.

The Quinta Market rehabilitation was under a joint venture with Marketlife Management and Leasing Corporation. Estrada said the city government did not spend a single centavo in the project, as in the rehabilitation of public markets in Sampaloc, Sta. Ana, San Andres and Trabajo.

Estrada said the construction of a ferry terminal, a joint effort with the Philippine Ports Authority, would benefit fish traders especially from Navotas.

It would also help decongest the traffic-prone Quezon Boulevard as it would serve as an alternate route for Quiapo-bound commuters, the mayor added.

City Engineer Rogelio Legazpi said the renovated Quinta Market has wet and dry sections, air-conditioned restrooms, a food court and fast food restaurants, security cameras, and public Wi-Fi connections.
